whileとduring
さて接続詞を続けましょう。whileとduringは「～している間」という意味で、whileは後ろに通常のSV(主語と動詞)が来ますがduringは名詞が来ます。
I studied harmonics while I was in Paris.
パリにいる間に和声学を学んだ。
I went to the concert during my stay in Paris.
パリに滞在中にそのコンサートへ行った。
althoughとdespite
althoughは「～ではあるけれど」despiteは「～にも関わらず」という意味です。althoughは主語と動詞が続きますが、despiteは名詞が続きます。
Although he can't play extremely well, there's something about his sound.
彼はものすごく上手くは弾けないけど彼の音にはなにか魅了されるものがある。
You will be accepted despite your level of playing the piano.
あなたのピアノの演奏レベルに関わらず受け入れられるだろう。
so that
so thatは「～できるように」という意味です。
I taught her harmonics so that she could understand the the basis of music.
彼女が音楽の基礎が理解できるように和声学を教えました。
同じ意味の接続詞にin order thatがあります。どちらも主節と従属節の時制を同じにします。
in that
in thatは「～という点で」という意味になります。
